What Can I Ride...?

If you want to get started on two wheels, or you're looking to finally take the plunge and get rid of your L-plates, then here's how to go about it. A complete guide from licence types to tests, it's all here.

16 Year Old

  • You may only ride a 50cc scooter restricted to 30mph (classified as a moped)

  • You will need to apply for a provisional moped licence and take Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) at a local training centre before taking to the roads. If you wish, Motoretta can deliver your new scooter to the centre or you can take your CBT on one of the centre's machines.

  • After gaining your CBT certificate you can ride on the road with L-plates for the life of the CBT certificate.

  • Motoretta can include this training as part of a package when you purchase your scooter.

  • Before you can remove the L-plates, you will need to take a Theory Test and then a Practical Test.

17 Year Old Plus / Non-Car Driver

  • Whether you wish to ride a 50cc scooter restricted to 30mph (classified as a moped), or something larger you will have to apply for a will have to apply for a provisional licence.

  • There are two types, a provisional moped licence and a provisional motorcycle licence, which will allow you to ride scooters of up to 125cc.

  • If you feel you are likely to want to ride something larger than 50cc at some time in the future it would be wise to apply for the latter.

  • You will have to take Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) at a training centre, before you venture on to the road as a learner rider displaying L-plates.

  • Motoretta can include this training as part of a package when you purchase your scooter. If you wish we can deliver your new scooter to the centre, or you can take your CBT on one of the centre~Rs machines. After gaining your CBT certificate you can ride on the road with L-plates for the life of the CBT certificate.

21 Year Old Above / Car Driver

  • Full car licence holders can ride a 50cc scooter restricted to 30mph (classified as a moped) without L-plates and without any further training providing the licence was issued before 1st February 2001.

  • A car licence also acts as a provisional licence for larger cc scooters. This means that a car driver can take a Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course (Motoretta can arrange this for you) and then ride a scooter of 125cc with L-plates for the life of the CBT certificate.

  • From the 1st February 2001 all new car licence holders must take CBT before riding any moped or scooter on the road.
